MARE and OBSAM promote a photography workshop on shallow bays in Maó

The session combined a theoretical introduction with a practical outing in Cala Teulera, where participants explored the ecological, scenic, and social values of the Port of Maó.

On June 7th, as part of the open day at the Port of Maó organized by the Balearic Port Authority, we held a photography workshop focused on shallow bays. The activity, organized in collaboration with the Socio-Environmental Observatory of Menorca (OBSAM), brought together participants interested in discovering these fragile coastal ecosystems through a critical and creative lens.

This workshop is part of our annual program, with which we aim to bring photography closer to the public as a tool for reflection, connection, and transformation in the face of the ecological crisis affecting the Balearic Sea. This time, we placed the spotlight on shallow bays—ecosystems especially vulnerable to human pressures such as urban development, diffuse pollution, and nautical activity.

The session combined a theoretical introduction with a hands-on photography activity at Cala Teulera, where we explored the ecological, scenic, and social values of the Port of Maó, while highlighting the power of visual language to foster awareness and a sense of responsibility for the territory.

From OBSAM, Aina Blanco and Irene Estaún contributed with a scientific perspective on the biodiversity of invertebrates and plant communities found in these areas. They emphasized the importance of preserving shallow bays and the essential role OBSAM plays in monitoring and sustainably managing Menorca’s coastal ecosystems.

From MARE, the workshop was led by our Technical Coordinator, Abraham Calero, photographer and environmental communicator, who provided tools and insights to harness photography as a catalyst for transformation. At MARE, we work to give voice—through images—to the values and challenges of the Balearic Sea, connecting art, science, and emotion to drive real shifts in perception and behavior toward our marine environments.

This collaboration with OBSAM exemplifies the strength of working together across science, art, and institutions to make marine conservation accessible to a wide and diverse audience. With actions like this, we bring our motto “From Focus to Action” to life, turning photography into a tool that not only captures reality but inspires awareness and promotes active participation in defending the sea.
